Building a Bunk Bed

We realized that we needed to vacate Matthew's toddler bed so Thomas could have a crib larger than the Pack-N-Play.

We looked online and in local stores to quickly and cheaply remedy the situation because of Trent's hectic work schedule and our rather immediate need. However, as convenient as the options seemed, they didn't fill the biggest requirement of having a project for the kids to work on. Trent found some plans online and for a little more money than buying a bunk bed at the store, we set out on another building project. But this time the plans were already drawn--we were hopeful that the time it would take to build would be less than other projects (more time spent building and less time spent "figuring it out").

Trent found a break in his call schedule on Vascular Surgery and--knowing that the next month would require a lot more of his weekend dedication to Oral Surgery--reserved a few post-call days and weekends to building the bunk bed. It went faster than past projects, but still not as fast as we hoped. Nevertheless, the bed was built with love and pride.

Here is the supply-pick-up-crew at Lowes. Trent really wanted both Nathan and Matthew to be involved in the purchasing process so he fit the wood in the van as best he could given the constraints of carseats.

As the final assembly day drew closer we went to a nearby mattress store and bought a mattress just for Matthew. He was pretty impressed by the purchase--especially since it had to be tied to the van's roof rack to get it home.
