We've been really so happy to have our little yard while living here. It's not huge, but the space has been just right for our little family. The chickens have been great pets and a project for the kids to have. They have primary responsibility to care for them. They have 1 to 2 egg customers each week and it's been a wonderful money-maker for them.
Trent became pretty fascinated with "worm farms" over the summer and decided to set up one and try his hand at it. Everyone was pretty excited when a shipment of live worms came in the mail. The worms live in 2 plastic bins that are kept in our garage. They eat the waste that the chickens do not, like potato peels, avocado peels, and even cardboard and junk mail. We then take their "castings" and use it as fertilizer in the garden. It is a neat concept and Trent has really enjoyed learning about it and working on the project.
In June, our friends the Thompsons moved to Idaho and we inherited their pet rabbit, Oreo. She is a beautiful black and white Lionhead rabbit and the kids have enjoyed having her.
The kids enjoyed helping to build her little hutch.
Our garden was a real jungle this year. We had a really wet summer, which turned out to be both good and bad for our garden. Coming from the desert I'm still just not used to the fact that irrigating is not necessary! Our tomato plants did not like all the rain and just didn't produce. I think we got 3 usable tomatoes from our 12 plants :( Our squash was a different story! We got about 35 spaghetti squash that we ate and froze. We also got plenty of zucchini and yellow crook neck squash.
Our sweet little "pioneer girl" gathering fresh produce.
