The 4th of July dawned bright and beautiful. The weather was uncharacteristically cool for July. We decided to take advantage of it and head to a parade. We didn't feel like battling traffic and crowds in the downtown parade, so we headed twenty minutes south to Wilmore. We didn't know what to expect out of the festivities and we were so pleasantly surprised! We ended up running into our across the street neighbors and ended up spending the morning with them. That made it all the more festive!
The parade was the perfect small-town parade: firetrucks, horses, lots of candy, patriotism and about fifteen or twenty minutes in length.
Matthew was definitely intrigued with everything going on around him!
Heidi and Nathan made out like little bandits with lots candy. Almost everything that went by threw handfuls of candy. I think they came away looking like Halloween!
This lawn mower brigade was hilarious and probably all our favorite.
Matthew got his first taste of an otter pop. He wasn't sure what to think...
After the parade finished we walked a few blocks down to the local park where the party continued. They were giving away free watermelon and selling .25 hotdogs so we stopped for lunch.
They had these military vehicles open for kids to climb up inside and check out. Really fun!
We enjoyed tapping our toes to some hometown music.
That night we grilled at home and had some neighbors over for dessert. And then we lit some late night sparklers.
At the end of the day we all declared it was one of our favorite 4th of July's ever!
