Keeneland Yearling Auction

Trent had a vacation week during September and while we weren't able to travel out of town, we tried to make some time to just enjoy where we live and our stage of life.

It was extra fun that his time off coincided with his birthday! One morning when the big kids were at school we decided to have a date (with the little ones in tow!) to Keeneland to watch the annual yearling auction.

We've been before and knew we really enjoyed it. It's so fascinating to watch these beautiful animals be sold for some pretty pennies. The people watching can't be beat.

There are names on the chairs in the small arena. Not sure who these people are but don't they sounds wealthy and important?

Matthew enjoyed watching the horses.

And doing some coloring. One of the auctioneer judges saw him in the crowd of mostly adults and brought him this coloring book and crayons.

And who could mind this cutie? Oh, he is so wonderful.

Look how much money that horse sold for!

This is the main arena. As you listen to the bidding you look around and wonder who is tendering that kind of cash! This arena doesn't look that full, but there is a whole other section behind the auctioneer stand with double the number of people.

A pretty art gallery in the hall outside the arena. This place is so fancy that when you go to the bathroom you have an attendant who expects a tip. Umm. I'm not really in THAT stage of life right now! It's fun to experience, though.

So these people hang out on the phone with their bosses and place bids. This guy is obviously not from these parts (no one wears that kind of cowboy hat in Kentucky!). He seemed to be from somewhere back west.

We thought these clocks in the area behind the auction arena with different time zones were neat. Horse racing is an international sport, and we've definitely experienced the confluence of culture and class while living here.
Can't help but love Kentucky.
