Trent is seeing the country this summer. Or at least going to lots of places all over the country. He is spending most of his time within the walls of hospitals.
He is interested in an oral surgery residency and he is visiting program to gain experience and see what this field entails.
During this last trip his first stop was Birmingham, Alabama.
He lived in the call room at the hospital and followed the residents around doing everything they do all day (and night). Oral surgery residents take care of the usual pulling of teeth etc. but they also take the trauma (like car accidents and fights) that comes to the hospital involving the head and neck. They also remove cancer and tumors, as well as help orthodontists straighten teeth by moving entire jaw bones. I had no idea it involved this until I started getting some pretty nasty pictures and descriptions that made me feel faint. Sigh.
Trent had to take self-portraits like this one to satisfy his wife's curiosity about what this life was like.
When you live in the hospital for a few weeks you get pretty acquainted with cafeteria food. And your board test study book, apparently.
A Birmingham sunset. Can't you just see the humidity in the air? Just in front of this was where the tornado path went a few weeks earlier.
The hospital campus covering several city blocks. Miles of hospital corridors with bridges crossing streets to connect buildings.
Not sure how well this picture will show up but this is an aerial view of the Tuscaloosa tornado damage. If you look closely there are several homes with blue tarps covering the damaged roofs.
After 2 weeks in Birmingham he headed to Dallas, Texas.
He was not able to stay in the hospital so he stayed in a nearby motel for a week. Not too long after he got there he met up with some severe weather. When the sky turned green and ominous and the sirens started sounding he knew a tornado was close. Not too much you can do when you are staying in a motel with no basement.
So Trent took shelter in the bathroom and lounged in the empty bathtub with his studies and some pillows. Luckily the tornado didn't damage his location at all and he was perfectly safe and sound. Except for some damage to the rental car from these bad boys:
Can you believe the size of that hail?
He enjoyed a trip to the Dallas Temple.
Trent's Uncle Bob and Aunt Kathy live nearby in Plano and Trent was able to stay with them for part of his stay. He loved getting to know them better as well as these cute kids! They enjoyed this Home Depot workshop together!
And check out this cool airplane museum they caught on the way to the airport!
The trip was a success and Trent got lots of experience and felt great about how it went. By the end, he was anxious to get home and we were anxious to have him back!
