Home-Grown Halloween Decorations

We've been busy making our own Halloween decorations lately. Actually, we just go around the neighborhood with flashlights and find Arizona's own lurking in the crevices.
There is no shortage of black widows. Trent has become expert at pointing out their webs. We learned that as long as we spray regularly for their food (crickets) these have always stayed away from the areas of our property we frequent.

Luckily this bad boy was found in a nearby neighborhood; we've never seen one in our neighborhood (knock on wood!). Just the sight of him makes my skin crawl. Trent showed me how they glow like this when you go "hunting" for them with a black light at night. I took my neighbor out last night. Mustering all our bravery and curiosity we hunted for no longer than 1 minute before finding a specimen. Dear Jen is always up for an adventure. Trent went out later to kill it, put it in a jar, and take it to school where he will turn it into a metal paperweight in his dental lab. Who knows...maybe if you're on our Christmas list you'll get one too!

Here is the little guy pictured above with the camera flash on.

yikes!! We have issues with black widows also, we've killed 30+ around our yard within the past month. I'm glad we don't have scorpions too.
